Configuring a Replica

Note: You can run PC-DCE cell server replicas on any supported Windows system except Windows 98. However, to maintain the highest level of protection from unauthorized access to the cell servers, avoid configuring security, cell directory, audit, and password strength servers; and the global directory agents on Terminal Server systems.

If you have configured a CDS replica into a cell which uses a CDS server compliant with a DCE version prior to 1.1, before beginning the following procedure go to the Options tab, select the CDS Directory Version 3.0 checkbox, and click OK.

To configure a replica cell server:

1. In the PC-DCE Configuration Panel, select the Custom tab.

2. Specify the cell name.

In the Cell Name field, enter the name of the DCE cell for which you are creating a replica. (For information about naming conventions, see Naming Cells.)

3. Enter the cell_admin name and password.

4. Specify replicas. You can create replicas of the Security server, the CDS server (either Root or Full), or both the Security server and one of the CDS options. If you are only replicating one kind of server on this system, select the Client radio button for the other server.

·      Security Service Replica — Creates and maintains a replica of the security server.

·      CDS Root Replica — Creates and maintains a clearinghouse that contains a readonly replica of the CDS root directory (/.:) only.

·      CDS Full Replica — Creates and maintains readonly replicas of all directories below and including the CDS root directory.

5. Specify primary server names.

In CDS Server and Security Server fields, enter the primary server names.

6. Specify Distributed Time Service Options.

If you do not plan to use DTS, de-select the Distributed Time Service checkbox and go to the next step.

If you intend to use DTS to synchronize the cell's time, select a radio button to specify the type of DTS services:

·      Time Service Client

·      Local Time Server (default)

·      Global Time Server

In the LAN Profile Name field, specify the LAN profile in which you want the DTS daemon on your system to look for the network locations of DTS servers. The default LAN profile entry is /.:/lan-profile.

7. Click OK.

The Configuration Status window appears and displays a series of status messages. When the configuration is complete, the program displays the Configuration Successful! message.

If you encounter an error, see Troubleshooting Configuration Problems.
