Two-Tier Architecture

The DCE directory service has a two-tier architecture. The cell directory service (CDS) is used within a cell, and a global external directory service, such as X.500 or DNS (BIND), is used between cells. The Global Directory Agent (GDA) is a naming gateway that supports intercell CDS directory lookups using a global directory service.
