Planning and Registering a Cell's Name

Process Step 2: Consider how your cell will be named:

· Choose which external global directory service you will use to register your cell name (DNS/BIND or GDS/X.500). When you register your cell name with a directory service, your cell name will be assigned a unique name.

See Understanding DCE for system and postal addresses of these external naming services, their cell naming syntax and examples, and other useful information.

· Create a name for your cell and register it with your chosen global directory service. Our sample company, which is a single-cell enterprise, created the DNS/BIND cell name Wigetco.com. (If our sample cell had chosen to use the GDS/X.500 global directory service, it might have created the cell name as /C=UK/O=Wigetco.)

See the DCE Cell Naming Process Flowchart, which shows the entire DCE Cell Naming Process graphically.
