Gathering Cell Population Information

Plan your cell's internal configuration as well as its relationships with outside cells or systems by gathering information about the cell's resources and business policies:

· Resources - The people, buildings, computers (hardware, software, network topology), and other objects that make your business operate.

· Business Policies - The work performed by your business, the processes used to do the work, security and personnel policies employed, current projects, employee roles, need-to-know information, system privileges, training needs and methods, as well as how your business manages change.

· Relationships with Outside Cells - Will your company have a single cell or multiple cells? Will the cell you are planning conduct business or need to communicate with other cells? Are those cells in the same location (buildings and geographies) and do those cells have similar or different resources and business policies? Do they share common languages, cultures, business practices, currencies, time zones, operating systems, and so on? Will your cell(s) extend across multiple LANs, multiple WANs, and so on?

This information will help you plan how many and the type of DCE objects (principals, groups, organizations, policies, accounts, and so on) your cell will require. It will also help you choose a cell name and naming scheme for the DCE objects in your cell, as well as the failover strategy that best suits your cell resource and service requirements.

See DCE Cell Naming Process Flowchart, which shows the entire DCE cell naming process graphically.
