Add and Name Applications

Process Step 13: Decide which applications your cell users require and where you will locate them in your cell's namespaces. Include the following tasks:

· Create a name for each application instance (such as mathserver1 or mathserver2). Also decide if desktop users will access the applications by this same name or if you will create a more familiar name for this purpose.

· Decide where in the cell's CDS namespace applications will be registered (such as /.:/apps or /.:/subsys).

· Decide the RPC group and/or the RPC profile(s) (if any) to which the application will belong.

The recommended method for RPC application clients to locate their servers is by using the RPC name service interface (NSI). This interface allows application searches either by service and UUID, by NSI group and UUID, or by RPC profile and UUID. See the OSF DCE Application Development Guide for more information on using the RPC NSI.

See the DCE Cell Naming Process Flowchart, which shows the entire DCE cell naming process graphically.
